United Equities, a local company with several Bellaire properties, acquired the buildings in the 6700 block of Ferris a few months ago. The properties are a couple of blocks from the planned two-story H-E-B grocery store. Work is under way to transform the 10,500-square-foot funeral building into a multi-tenant space including Define fitness studio, set to open in April. Owner Debrah Hall selected the site for the building's potential, its ample parking and Bellaire's sense of community. The new space will have a French country feel with a calming atmosphere, she said. There will be areas for a cycle room, body classes, hammock classes, trampoline classes plus childcare. "In addition, there didn't seem to be a whole lot of exercise options in the area," Hall said. Other tenants will be Nekter Juice Bar, a California chain expanding in the local market, and The 401, a new concept named for the last part of the Bellaire ZIP code affiliated with the Hungry's chain. "I think it's just what people are looking for - a modern, fun place to eat and shop without leaving the neighborhood," Doug Freedman of United Equities said. "Bellaire has always been known as the 'City of Homes' and there's been very limited commercial development over the years." Officer M. Santillanes was dispatched to the Bellaire Police Department lobby in reference to a theft call in the 5200 block of Bellaire Boulevard. Officer Santillanes met with the victim who stated that between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. June 25, an unknown suspect stole his bicycle from the front of his place of employment. • At 5:46 a.m., Officer D. Norman was dispatched to a disabled vehicle in the 6600 block of IH 610 southbound. Upon arrival, the driver was found passed out behind the wheel with the vehicle still in drive. Officers D. Norman and O. Barrientos attempted to wake the driver up multiple times prior to having to break the passenger side window. Officers were able to place the vehicle in park and pull the driver from the vehicle. The driver had a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath and/or person. The driver was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). Officers J. Clisham, O. Barrientos, A. Carranza and C. Barber assisted in this case. • At 1:25 p.m., Officer M. Santillanes was dispatched to the Bellaire Police Department lobby for an identity theft call in the 5300 block of Patrick Henry. Upon arrival the officer met with the victim who stated an unknown person used her social security number to fraudulently file for unemployment benefits. • At 9:29 p.m., Officer Marcotte initiated a traffic stop on a 2004 Honda for having an altered registration. The driver was arrested for driving without an operator’s license and registration and a passenger was arrested for possession of marijuana. June 26 ...
